India will assume the chairmanship of the Wassenaar Arrangement (WA) on January 1, 2023. WA is a multilateral export control regime that seeks to promote transparency and greater responsibility in the transfer of conventional arms and dual-use goods and technologies. India joined WA in 2017 and will take over from Ireland as Chair. As the incoming chair of the body, India "remains ready and committed to work in close cooperation with other members to further the Wassenaar Arrangement’s goal of promoting security and stability in the sale and transfer of materials and technologies that can be used to make a nuclear and conventional arsenal."  The Wassenaar Arrangement plays an active role in addressing the issue of cyber security by promoting responsible and transparent export controls on certain dual-use items that can be used in malicious cyber activities.
The Wassenaar Arrangement on Export Controls for Conventional Arms and Dual-Use Goods and Technologies is a multilateral export control regime that was established in 1996 to ensure that exports of sensitive items do not contribute to the development or enhancement of military capabilities that undermine international and regional security and stability. The arrangement comprises 42 participating states, including India, which in December 2021, assumed the chairmanship of the arrangement for a period of one year. As the chair of the Wassenaar Arrangement, India will be responsible for leading the organization's activities and representing its interests on the international stage.
