The two halves were laid bare. The urgency of the moment, the voice of the bird, the swing of the ball, the feel of Mr. Bankes’s hand holding hers and moving lightly on it, as if she were a scout advancing into the desert under the command of a leader, the excitement and the beauty of it, and then the solitariness, and the responsibility—all this came over her again, and she felt as if she had been running.’’
