Comprehension Passage

Interpretation is the process of extraction of qualitative and quantitative information of objects from aerial photographs or satellite images. Interpretation is generally called image interpretation except for the case when the interpretation is carried out on aerial photographs. Interpretation of aerial photographs is known as aerial photo interpretation. Based on the mode of the interpretation, interpretation can be categorized into visual and digital interpretation. Visual interpretation involves visual analysis of aerial photographs and satellite images. When the interpretation is carried out with the help of computer software, it is known as digital interpretation. Visual image interpretation is a process of identifying features seen on the images by an analyst/interpreter and communication of information obtained from these images to others for evaluating their significance. This process, however, is not restricted to making decisions concerning what objects appear in images but it also includes determination of their relative locations and extents.

How is visual interpretation different from digital interpretation?

1
Visual interpretation uses 3D models while digital interpretation uses 2D images
2
Visual interpretation focuses on satellite images exclusively, whereas digital interpretation focuses on aerial photographs
3
Visual interpretation requires no prior knowledge, while digital interpretation requires extensive training
4
Visual interpretation is performed manually, whereas digital interpretation uses computer software
