Thus, parental illiteracy, non-accessibility of schools, social and cultural milieu, and ineffective enforcement of legal provisions pertaining to child labour are some of the significant causes of child labour. However, no cause can justify the existence of child labour. There is complete loss of invaluable childhood with near permanent damage to social development. Lack of education forces children into the worst employment prospects as adults.

Although the labour of young children of both sexes is exploited, the plight of the girl child's labourer is worse off. She is a child, a girl, and a labourer. She faces discrimination on all counts - in almost all areas - rural and urban. Girl child labour is prevalent in the following areas:
