Music is the art of arranging sounds in time to produce a composition through the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. It is one of the cultural universal aspects of all human societies. General definitions of music include common elements such as pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "colour" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping; there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces (such as songs without instrumental accompaniment), and pieces that combine singing and instruments.

Including music activities on a regular basis during school time can also help encourage creativity and teamwork. Speaking to The National Commission on Music Education Los Angeles’ forum, parent Pat Abicare reported seeing “first-hand”, the immense ability of music to foster creativity in the lives of children. This is what she says: “Music and the other arts enable our students to build self-confidence through their ability to develop creativity and to find their freedom of expression.” Another parent Jackie Richmond, belonging to the Chicago Forum, says, “When my children were learning music in school, they had to learn other things; to sit still, to listen, to pay attention, to concentrate. With music you don’t learn just music; you learn many things.” Music education also provides students with a wide variety of personal skills as critical thinking, problem-solving, and learning how to work cooperatively toward shared goals. Regular music classes bring about frequent requirements where children learn to subordinate individual performance to group goals, and this encourages them to imbibe the skills of cooperation and teamwork.
