Comprehension Passage

The 2024 Sustainable Development Report reveals that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) faces significant challenges worldwide. Only 16% of SDG targets are on track to be met by 2030, while 84% show limited progress or regression. Stagnation is most apparent in goals like Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Sustainable Cities (SDG 11), and Life on Land (SDG 15). Certain targets, such as obesity rates, press freedom, and life expectancy, have regressed since 2015, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these setbacks, there is some positive momentum; goals associated with Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9) show slow but steady progress.

SDG progress also varies greatly by region. Nordic countries, led by Finland, rank highest in SDG achievement, while BRICS and BRICS+ countries have outpaced the global average. India, for example, ranks 109th out of 166 countries, performing well in Poverty Reduction but lagging in Sustainable Cities and Climate Action. Additionally, the financial challenges for lower-income countries underline the need for reforms to the global financial system, along with new institutions and financing mechanisms to support sustainable development. Lastly, global cooperation is essential. Barbados leads in commitment to multilateralism, while the United States ranks lowest, highlighting a need for greater global cooperation metrics.

1
