It is well known for the ten-year long war between the Greeks and the Trojans and the heroism of a number of legendary warriors, and for the Trojan horse. What may not be familiar, however, is the story of how the war began. According to Greek myth, the strife between the Trojans and the Greeks started at the wedding of Peleus, King of Thessaly, and Thetis, a sea nymph. All of the gods and goddesses had been invited to the wedding celebration in Troy except Eris, the goddess of discord. She had been omitted from the list of guests because her presence always caused quarrels between mortals and immortals. To take revenge on those who had insulted her, Eris decided to cause a conflict. Into the middle of the banquet hall, she threw a golden apple marked "for the most beautiful." All the goddesses began to quarrel over who should possess it. The choice was narrowed to Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Someone was needed to settle the controversy by picking a winner. The job eventually tell to Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, who was said to be a good judge of beauty. Paris did not have an easy job. Each goddess, eager to win the golden apple, tried hard to bribe him. Hera said, "Give me the prize, and I will make you the most powerful king in the world." Athena said, "No one will be able to match your wisdom if you give me the apple." Aphrodite smiled at the youth and said, "Give it to me, and you shall have for a wife the most beautiful woman in the world." Paris awarded the golden apple to Aphrodite, and from that moment Hera and Athena hated him and his family. Aphrodite offered Helen, the daughter of Zeus and the most beautiful woman in the land, to Paris. Paris was very anxious to claim Helen and set off for Sparta in Greece. In Sparta, Paris learned that Helen was the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. He accepted the hospitality of King Menelaus and stayed in his palace as an honourable guest for a few days. As soon as Helen saw Paris, she fell in love with him. She eloped with Paris carrying much of the king's wealth with her and they fled to Troy. Menelaus was mad with anger and vowed revenge. He collected his loyal Greek forces and set sail for Troy to reclaim Helen.
