Comprehension Passage

Read the given passage and answer the following questions carefully  -

In 1896, gold was discovered in the Klondike region of Yukon, Canada, triggering an unprecedented Gold rush that brought about significant transformation. Prospectors and adventurers traveled from far and wide in the hope of finding wealth overnight. The journey was treacherous, adventures were perilous, and only a minuscule number of those who embarked on the trip eventually struck gold. But it was not just the gold seekers that defined the era. The Klondike Gold Rush stimulated worldwide interest in prospecting for gold and the flowering of valuable industries that continue even today.

Entrepreneurs such as Friedrich Trump, the grandfather of Donald Trump, made the most of their opportunities without touching a shovel. Friedrich arrived in the Klondike and quickly set up a restaurant and inn that often served as the last comfort point for many gold diggers. He made his fortune by providing necessary commodities such as food, drinks, accommodation, and even entertainment to tired and hungry prospectors, ushering the service industry's tremendous growth.

Interestingly, the Klondike Gold Rush's environmental impact was significant. The insatiable digging and excavation transformed the landscape dramatically. Rivers got polluted from runoff and waste, while plants and animals faced displacement. However, the event also led to a boom in the relevant scientific research – geographers, biologists, chemists flocked to the region to study the environmental change, fueling an unexpected surge in environmental sciences.

What effect did the Klondike Gold Rush have on the environment?

1
It had no impact
2
It led to a decrease in pollution
3
It caused pollution and landscape change
4
It led to increased plant growth
