Comprehension Passage

Directions: Read the following passage and answer the given questions:

Organisms have the ability to grow and reproduce. They can be single-celled or multi-celled and are found in all environments, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains. Examples of organisms include plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria. All organisms need food, water, and oxygen in order to survive and thrive. Organisms can be classified into three domains: bacteria, archaea, and eukarya. Bacteria are single-celled organisms that contain their DNA in a simple ring and reproduce through binary fission. Archaea are bacteria-like organisms that are unrelated to bacteria and perform a wide variety of functions. Eukarya are multi-celled organisms that contain membrane-bound organelles and a nucleus. Viruses are also sometimes classified as organisms, though they do not contain the mechanisms to create or store energy. Living characteristics of viruses include the ability to reproduce – but only in living host cells – and the ability to mutate. Non-living characteristics include the fact that they are not cells, have no cytoplasm or cellular organelles, and carry out no metabolism on their own and therefore must replicate using the host cell's metabolic machinery.
Biotic and abiotic elements are two components of an ecosystem that interact with each other. Biotic components are things such as plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. Abiotic components are the physical and chemical factors in the environment, such as temperature, soil type, light, water, and air. Biotic and abiotic components are interconnected and interact with each other in a variety of ways. For example, plants produce oxygen, which is then used by animals to breathe, and animals produce carbon dioxide, which is then used by plants for photosynthesis. Both biotic and abiotic components are necessary for a healthy and balanced ecosystem.

2
