Child labour remains a pervasive issue across the globe, affecting millions of children and depriving them of a normal childhood, education, and essential development opportunities. Defined as work that is mentally, physically, socially, or morally harmful to children, child labour is predominantly seen in economically disadvantaged regions. It frequently involves tasks in hazardous environments, such as mining, agriculture, and construction, and often for paltry wages.

Several factors contribute to the persistence of child labour. Poverty is a primary driver, compelling families to send their children to work to supplement household income. Limited access to quality education exacerbates the problem, as lack of schooling diminishes future employment prospects, trapping children in a cycle of poverty and labour. In some cultures, traditional practices and social norms also play a role in perpetuating child labour.

International laws, such as those promulgated by the International Labour Organization (ILO), aim to eradicate child labour by setting minimum age requirements and ensuring safe working conditions. Various global initiatives focus on improving educational opportunities and providing financial aid to affected families, thereby reducing the economic necessity for child labour.

Progress has been made in recent years, with significant reductions in child labour rates reported in many regions. However, consistent efforts are required to address root causes and enforce legislation robustly. The global community must work together to create environments where children are free from exploitation and able to pursue their full potential.
