Geopolitics is traditionally the study of how political power is reinforced or undermined by geographical arrangements (boundaries, coalitions, spatial networks, natural resources, etc.).It has tended to be concerned with international relations and in particular with the geostrategic concerns of major powers. The work of Ratzel and Mackinder are early examples of geopolitical writing with an emphasis on the geographic bases of political strategy.
