Bearings are provided in bridges, in order to:

a) Distribute the load form superstructure on a large area and to transfer to piers

b) Allow the grid of the bridge to take a free angular movement the ends when loaded

c) Allow free movement of girders due to temperature variations

d) Prevent excessive damage to the bridge if any pier sinks slightly
