Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born around 563 BC into the Sakya gana, a small clan of the Kshatriya caste. His parents were Suddhodhana and Mahamaya, and he was married to Yashodhara. Buddha embarked on a spiritual journey and learned meditation from Alara Kalama. He attained enlightenment under a peepal tree in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, after which he traveled to Sarnath, near Varanasi. It was at Sarnath where he delivered his first sermon, known as the dharmachakra-pravartan or the 'turning of the wheel of law'. This event marked the foundation of the Buddhist community or sangha. Buddha's teachings emphasized kindness and respect for all living beings. He passed away in 483 BC under a Sal tree in Kushinagar. Buddha's journey from his enlightenment at Bodh Gaya to his first sermon at Sarnath and finally to his death in Kushinagar is central to Buddhist tradition and underscores his message of compassion and the middle path.
