The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, established under Article 148 of the Indian Constitution, is an independent authority appointed by the President for a term up to six years or till the age of 65. Tasked with auditing financial transactions of both central and state governments, the CAG plays a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability. Unlike other offices, the CAG's removal is aligned with the procedure for a Supreme Court judge, ensuring independence. As the guardian of the public purse since the creation of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department in 1753, the CAG, a position currently held by Girish Chandra Murmu, is integral to the nation's fiscal governance. Comptroller and Auditor General of India is the most important Officer under the Constitution of India, for he is the guardian of the public purse as said by Dr. B R Ambedkar.
