Biodiversity hotspots are regions with high species richness and endemism, crucial for in situ conservation. There are 34 hotspots globally, including three in India: the Western Ghats, Indo-Burma, and Eastern Himalaya. The Western Ghats house about 325 globally threatened animal species and 4000-5000 native plant species, including the Asiatic elephant and lion-tailed macaque. Holstein-Friesian cattle, originating from Europe, are prolific dairy animals also used for meat. In India, cow species like Gir and Red-Sindhi serve similar purposes. Species diversity encompasses 1.2 million known species. The IUCN, focused on nature conservation, publishes the Red Data Book, categorizing species' conservation status, with contributions from the Zoological Survey of India and the Botanical Survey of India.
