Read the given paragraph and answer the following questions.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) in India originated from the Sargeant Report, which led to the formation of a University Grants Committee in 1945 to oversee three Central Universities. In 1947, the Committee’s role expanded to include all existing universities. The University Education Commission, chaired by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan in 1948, recommended reconstituting the Committee based on the UK’s University Grants Commission model. Formally inaugurated in 1953, the UGC became a statutory body in 1956 through an Act of Parliament, tasked with maintaining standards in university education. The UGC, headquartered in New Delhi, also has six regional centres in Bengaluru, Bhopal, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Pune, to ensure effective regional coverage and support.
