Radhakrishnan in 1948, recommended reconstituting the Committee based on the UK’s University Grants Commission model. Formally inaugurated in 1953, the UGC became a statutory body in 1956 through an Act of Parliament, tasked with maintaining standards in university education. The UGC, headquartered in New Delhi, also has six regional centres in Bengaluru, Bhopal, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Pune, to ensure effective regional coverage and support.
