Comprehension Passage

Directions: Read the following paragraph and answer the questions below.
Ecology is the scientific study of the interactions between living things and their environment. It focuses on how organisms influence each other and the environment they inhabit. When studying ecology, scientists look at energy flow, biogeochemical cycles, population growth, and interactions among species. Energy flow relates to how energy moves through an ecosystem. In primary productivity, energy is often generated by plants and other autotrophs – organisms that can make their own food – which harness light energy from the sun to produce sugars using photosynthesis.Biogeochemical cycles are the natural processes that recycle nutrients in various chemical forms from the non-living environment to living organisms and then back. For instance, the water cycle and the nitrogen cycle are two examples of these kinds of cycles.Increased ecological awareness has led to a renewed interest in renewable energy sources which can help balance out climate change while preserving biodiversity. This is a vital factor since biodiversity lends resilience to an ecosystem, enabling it to survive despite external shocks.

What are biogeochemical cycles?

1
The movement of planets
2
The process of recycling nutrients from the environment to organisms and back
3
The process of creating new species
4
The physical movements of animals during migration
