The vast and vibrant Amazon rainforest, renowned as the world's largest and a cornerstone in combating climate change, sprawls across northwestern Brazil, reaching into Peru, Colombia, and several other South American nations. Encompassing an area of 6.9 million square kilometers—comparable in size to the 48 contiguous United States—the Amazon Basin claims about 40% of South America’s landmass. It is a biodiversity hotspot, crisscrossed by thousands of rivers including the mighty Amazon, and is the habitat for an astonishing variety of life. Known for its contribution to the global climate through the storage of 150-200 billion tons of carbon in its forests and soils, the Amazon plays a crucial role in stabilizing the earth's climate by releasing 20 billion tonnes of water into the atmosphere, thus influencing rainfall patterns across the continent.

The Amazon is not only an ecological treasure but also a cultural mosaic, home to 47 million people, including over 2 million indigenous inhabitants. It supports more than 400 different indigenous communities—more than any other region on the planet—communicating in around 300 indigenous languages. It is estimated to house nearly 400 billion trees, each playing its part in this ecological ballet. However, the first nine months of 2022 marked a grim milestone with the highest deforestation rates ever recorded, driven by cattle ranching, infrastructure development, mining, illegal logging, and land grabbing. This rampant destruction poses a severe threat not only to the rainforest's rich biodiversity and the indigenous cultures that thrive within it but also to the global efforts to combat climate change.
