Comprehension Passage

In the diverse and vibrant world of animal adaptations, the Mimic Octopus, scientifically known as Thaumoctopus mimicus, holds a unique place. Discovered off the coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia in 1998, it is renowned for its astonishing ability to mimic the physical likeness and movements of more than fifteen different species, including sea snakes, lionfish, flatfish, brittle stars, giant crabs, seahorses, jellyfish, sea anemones, mantis shrimp, and even stingrays.

The Mimic Octopus, generally ranging in length from 60 cm to 70 cm, uses its unique capability as a means of defense and predation. When threatened, it can appear as a venomous species such as a sea snake or lionfish, discouraging potential predators. Conversely, when hunting, it often impersonates less threatening creatures, such as a crab or a jellyfish, to get closer to its prey.

Interestingly, its behavior differs from the camouflage techniques used by many other marine species. While camouflaging generally involves blending into the surrounding environment, the Mimic Octopus uses a form of active camouflage where it not only changes its color but also its shape and behavior to deceive others. It has the ability to control the pigments in its skin, allowing it to change color in a fraction of a second, while its soft body can take on the shapes of various animals.

Research has shown that the Mimic Octopus is a solitary creature, mostly active during the day. It is known to inhabit sandy or muddy seabeds where it can burrow itself for protection or to hunt for its prey, which includes small fish, crabs, and worms.
