Thangka painting, generally painted on cotton and found in Buddhist monasteries of Ladakh, is a unique symbol of historical and cultural ties of India and Tibet. There is no clear description about when Thangka painting was started in India. In ancient Indian art and literature, the word Thangka has nowhere been found. But many Thangka paintings made in China and Tibet were found in the Buddhist monasteries situated at the bordering areas. The Thangka found in India from Tibet is not older than the 10th century. So from its advent, Thangka painting was a subject of curiosity of archaeologists and art historians.
