According to the 2018 Global Nutrition Report released in November 2018, India holds almost a third of the world's burden for stunting which shows that India is facing a major malnutrition crisis. Talking about the children who are stunted, India tops the list (45.6 million) followed by Nigeria ( 13.9 million) and Pakistan (10.7 million). The National family Health Survey 4 (NFHS4) also pointed out that India has a very high burden of micronutrient deficiencies caused by Vitamin A, Iodine, Iron and Folic acid leading to Night Blindness, goitre, Anaemia and various birth defects. The survey further observed that 58.4% of children under 5 in India are anaemic, 53.1% of women in the reproductive age group are anaemic and 35.7% of children under 5 are under weight. India has a high prevalence of childhood stunting and maternal and childhood anaemia. These can have long term effects on cognition and overall productivity. There is evidence that malnutrition can result in potential Gross Domestic Product (GDP) losses of 2-3% and a more than 10% potential reduction in life time earnings for each malnourished individual.
