Comprehension Passage

Read the passage and answer the question.

Numbers 91-95 based on it. India has only 3% of the world's land resources and 5% of the world's water resources. Yet India is the second largest food producer in the world and second in production of fruits and vegetables. On the contrary. Indian Medical Council in 2015 reports that 12-13% of the population in India die due to non-availability of nutritious food; and 25% of Indians go to bed without food. Why is there such discrepency in India?

The reasons may be clubbed under three broad classifications First, production of food crops that do not satisfy nutritional needs (nutritional unavailability), second, healthy foods are beyond purchasing power of the poor (unaffordablity), third, weak supply chain and failur of government intervention that still prevents dissection to exercise their right to food (nutritional inaccessability).

Our food production has reached the capacity to provide one third of the popultion with adequate food grains under NFSM. But to ensure nutritional security we have to focus on existing agricultural methodologies. We have to shift cropping pattern from cereals to
nutrient based one that promotes horticulture, coarse grains, pulses and millets Horticulture production has doubled over the years according to NNM.

An Indian has access to only 2455 Kcal/day which is much lower than 3000 Kcal of European countries. FAO/WHO recommends atleast 400 gms of fruits and vegetables perday Indians cannot even manage to get half of the daily target. Government should promote domestic nutrition needs by Government ensuring quality seeds, promotion of integrated pest and disease mangement encourage peri-urban vegetable farming and roof gardens to grow vegetables. School premisis that raise vegetable and greens will have nutritional impact. Recent increase in the minimum support price of pulses and their inclusion in National Food Security Mission is a welcome step. Organic farming should be put forward as an alternative better farming practice. As nutrient dense food is expensive, so food fortification can help it to reach the poor. Non-availability of nutritious food leads directly to poor quality life, loss of productivity, poor mental development, increased health cost and decreased school days. The demographic divide now is turning into demographic liabiblity.
