Read the following passage and answer the given questions-
Climate change, a significant shift in the Earth's climate system, is regularly making headlines. Experts suggest that human activities are primarily responsible, especially the excessive burning of fossil fuels that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It is estimated that the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas, has increased by around 47% since the start of the Industrial Revolution[1].
Due to the trapped heat, the Earth's average surface temperature has risen by approximately 1.18 degrees Celsius since the late 19th century. This phenomenon, known as global warming, has profound implications on the planet and human life[2]. Glaciers, for instance, are melting at an unprecedented pace, leading to a rise in sea levels and posing a threat to coastal cities. Global warming can also trigger extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts, and heatwaves, creating a ripple effect on human and wildlife habitats.
Forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide. However, deforestation for agriculture, logging, and urbanization is diminishing this crucial carbon sink and further accelerating climate change. Governments and scientists worldwide are working toward reducing carbon emissions, reforestation, and the transition to renewable energy sources, but the rate of change needs to be faster.
