Why Speed Matters More Than Accuracy in SSC Maths

SSC CGL Tier-1 gives you 60 minutes for 100 questions. That's 36 seconds per question. The Quantitative Aptitude section has 25 questions — you have roughly 15 minutes total. Speed is not optional; it's the exam.

Percentage Shortcuts

Memorise these fraction-to-percentage conversions and you'll never need a calculator for percentage questions:

  • 1/8 = 12.5%  |  1/6 = 16.67%  |  1/5 = 20%
  • 1/4 = 25%  |  1/3 = 33.33%  |  3/8 = 37.5%
  • 2/5 = 40%  |  1/2 = 50%  |  3/5 = 60%
  • 5/8 = 62.5%  |  2/3 = 66.67%  |  3/4 = 75%

Tip: "What is 37.5% of 480?" — instantly read as 3/8 × 480 = 180. Done in 3 seconds.

Ratio & Proportion Trick

When ratios are given, always work with the multiplier directly. If A:B = 3:5 and total = 160, then A = (3/8) × 160 = 60. Never set up algebra for basic ratio problems.

Squaring Numbers Ending in 5

To square any number ending in 5: multiply the tens digit by (tens digit + 1), then append 25.

  • 35² → 3 × 4 = 12 → 1225
  • 75² → 7 × 8 = 56 → 5625
  • 95² → 9 × 10 = 90 → 9025

Simplification: BODMAS Fast Track

Never fully expand brackets if you can spot a pattern. Look for:

  • Common factors to cancel before multiplying
  • (a+b)(a-b) = a² - b² patterns hidden in the question
  • Approximation when options are far apart (round to nearest 10)

Profit & Loss One-Formula Approach

Everything in Profit & Loss reduces to: SP = CP × (100 ± P%) / 100. Memorise this one formula and derive everything else from it — don't memorise 10 separate formulas.

Practice Strategy on QuizAll

Go to Maths → Quantitative Aptitude on QuizAll. For each topic, do 2 rounds:

  1. First round untimed — learn the shortcut method from solutions
  2. Second round timed — target under 45 seconds per question

Anything consistently taking you over 60 seconds is a topic where you need a better shortcut, not more practice.
